    • According to the 1901 census record the head of the household is John Melvin whose wife is Lena. They have three children listed, including Maud (age 1 year) who was born 22 Sep 1899. Appearing at the bottom of the list are two other entries, Ethel Orser identified as a sister in law of the head of household. We know this to be Lena's younger sister. Also listed is Lee Orser (age 1 year) born 14 Jun 1899.also listed as a son of John Melvin. We know Lena could not possibly be the mother of both children if we assume the birth dates are correct. Therefore, given the surnames of Lee and Ethel, it is logical to conclude that Lee is the son of her sister Ethel Orser. Ethel is not known to have been married prior to 1902 when she married John Clendenning. The implication is that she would have been a young unwed mother staying in the home of her older sister with her infant child.

Subsequent research would indicate that this conclusion is incorrect. A NB birth registration documents the birth of a Lee Melvin on 14 Jun 1898, to Joseph Melvin and Lena Orser exactly one year prior to our Lee Orser. This weakens the above conclusion and strengthens the idea that the census taker may have made an error and/or made an incorrect assumption.
