    Notes
    • Verna had just graduated from Carleton County Vocational School when she and Russ married. Russ was a meat cutter for Meltzs in Woodstock at the time. The following year Nancy Ann was born and in 1940 Sharon Lorraine came along. When Sharon was one and a half months old Russ joined the Canadian Army. In 1945 he returned home from overseas, and in February of 1946 he received an honourable discharge.

Russ came from a large family and a very close one. They were all great singers, and Russ was in several Minstrel Shows after the war. They were put on by the Presbyterian Church and any money raised went to the church. The last show he was in took place in 1951 when he sang “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans” and a woman called Verna the day after the first show and hold her “your husband stole the show!”; and Verna agreed he did.

Before going into the services Russ had operated his own business. He left his brother in charge when he went overseas, but the brother could not make a go of it and it was sold to McLeans. Russ was meat manager for Cluffs Market for many years. Verna worked in Dr. Tantons office (eye, ears, nose and throat specialist) in Woodstock for six years after their youngest child was out of school. Verna and Russ enjoyed thirty-seven years of marriage before his death. Verna resided in Woodstock after retiring.

Shari (Herrick) Thomas, their granddaughter, recalls: “My parents moved to Michigan in May 1966 but I have many fond memories of my grandparents. We lived in Houlton, Maine, and they would always pick me up after school on Fridays and I would spend weekends, holidays, and vacations with them. Gram has always been a good cook and I remember her cooking a lot. She also liked to play the piano and have everyone sing. My grandfather loved to go for Sunday drives along the old country roads and drive much like a cowboy would ride a horse! He loved to ice skate and used to tell me about the times he would skate from Woodstock to Hartland along the St. John River when he was “courting” my grandmother. It must have been beautiful skating along the river and then seeing the old Covered Bridge. Perhaps this was one of his most cherished memories which I intend to pass on to my children.”

Verna resided with her son Jack, in Woodstock, until her death, and was cared for by his wife Anne.

2020 update - Russ and Vernas daughter, Sharon (Taylor) Chase, recalls “Mum was a great cook. I miss her Sunday dinners and especially her apple pie made with New Brunswick apples. Dad had a wonderful sense of humour. He usually had a joke to tell me when I was up to Woodstock for a visit. He, like Mum, came from a large family of 11 kids.”

Vernas granddaughter, Katie, shares “Gram was the best baker and had a whole kitchen drawer dedicated to flour. Suffice to say, her house always smelled amazing. Ill never forget the big dinner she would prepare when we arrived in Woodstock every summer. I used to love helping her shell peas from her massive back yard garden. Gram and I had a little tradition at the end of our trips whenever we visited each other. I would sneak a teddy bear into her suitcase right before she left for the Windsor airport, or she would sneak one into mine right before we hit the road back to Detroit. I dont know if my Mom even knows that we did that. I would love to be able to sew as well as her someday.”
