Eulogy for Dalton Paul Hallett
Given on Sunday, October 11, 2015

Our family would like to thank each of you for coming today to celebrate the life of my father, Dalton Paul Hallett.

Dad was born on September 29, 1924 on the homestead in Upper Brighton, the second youngest child of Scott and Lydia. He attended the country school in Upper Brighton, and then Hartland Superior School. For the majority of his early life Dad farmed, occasionally loading lumber or working out in someone elses potato house.

On February 15, 1946 Dad and his brother Wendell bought the homestead farm from their father Scott. The farm stretched back from its railway track boundary for about 2 miles. Dad worked it with various hired help until 1979. Of the 165 acres, he usually had 90-100 acres planted in potatoes each year. He would recall prices for a carload of potatoes ranging from a high (in his time) of $17/barrel to as low as 2 cents, or dumping them.

I have many memories of Dad working the farm. The old red Farmall tractor that he had for years would come rolling in from out back and depending on what job he had been doing, he would be covered in a lot of dust, or worse, yellow potato spray. At that time Im not even sure there were enclosed cabins on tractors. He would be hot and thirsty, come into the house, open the fridge, take out Moms ice water jug and drink right from it, just to get her to say “Dalton! Stop that!”. Then he would roll his eyes around and grin.

No matter how tired he was when I was smaller, he would indulge me in a “walk around the house” before dinner time. I also remember as a kid being fascinated by the interesting tan lines he had where his cap sat on his forehead all day, and where his shirtsleeves ended. Such is the lot of a farmer.

I have many fond memories of growing up in the original homestead house, and consider it a privilege to have been able to do so. I have often imagined what that house was like when it was full of children, parents and visitors. Dad would tell stories of how Grandmother Hallett would house and feed the travelling preachers, and anyone who was working on the railroad, or who Grandfather brought home. He also told of the escapades he and his brothers and sisters would get into. It was said that Grandfather Hallett was not terribly strict or he would have killed them all! About as bad as it might get would be “Now mind I tell you, if I come up there Ill warm the wax in your ears!” Dad always spoke highly and fondly of his parents.

In 1975, Dad and Mom built a new house located at the bottom of the hill from their old one. During the fall of 1979 Dad retired from farming and the farmland was purchased by his brother Don and neighbour John Bubar.

Retiring from farming opened up a new chapter for Dad. He had a couple of jobs working out until he obtained employment as a distributor for Atlantic Lotto in August of 1980. He worked for them until 1992, when he really retired. That was a job that suited him well since he liked to drive and was an early riser. He also enjoyed the interaction with his customers.

Dad had a number of pass-times that he enjoyed at various stages of his life. He liked to curl, and as a kid I remember dusting a couple of trophies he had for that. He also enjoyed playing cards with his buddies, among them Stan Melville and Frank Hickling. They would come to our place up the hill and Mom would make them sandwiches, put on a big granite pot of tea (made with one or two handfuls of loose tea) and then she and I would go to bed. They would play half the night and smoke till you couldnt see across the room. What was left of the tea would be almost like molasses by morning!

One of Dads other pass-times, particularly after he retired, was golfing. He would be one of the first ones out in the morning, and I know he golfed with Blaine, Glen, Howard and anyone else he could tag along with. Kathryn and Keith liked the fact that Grampy golfed because he used to bring the golf cart home when we came for a visit, and he was quite liberal in giving them rides when they were smaller up the hill, around the yard, back to the potato house all quite fun.

Dad has been known to do some hunting also. I remember he and Ralphie Clark hunting deer but perhaps thats enough said on that topic!

Dad was actually a fairly light-hearted person he kind of took many things in stride and had the philosophy that “it takes all kinds to make a world”. He could certainly spin a story and loved to share old stories with us. Of course, he shared many of these more than once, but it makes me smile remembering it. More often than not they would involve something “Father” had said.

Dad of course liked his brothers, but he had a soft spot for his sisters; he was very fond of them all. Maybe thats because aside from Wendell and Owen, they were closest to him in age, with the exception of Millicent. I remember lots of visits to Aunt Ellas and Aunt Vernas on a Sunday, and then we would stay for supper. I was constantly back and forth to Aunt Polly and Uncle Wimmies with Dad and Mom as they were just across the road. And it was always an occasion when Aunt Bud, Uncle Milo and Sandra came home for a visit from Michigan. That would often involve a fishing trip to Howard Brook another of Dads favourite things to do, along with fiddle-heading in the spring.

I know after Mom went into Central Carleton Home, Dad would drop in on Aunt Bud, often a couple of times a day, to exchange news, have a coffee and a snack, and Connie would likely have something for him to take home for his dinner or supper. They were very good to him, and I have always appreciated that.

And speaking of news and coffee, one of the things Dad looked most forward to over the last ten years or so were his Saturday morning coffee dates with Blaine and Glen, and the breakfasts at Pembroke. He really enjoyed those times, even though, in in his usual way, they were hurried through. I have told him before, but I do want to thank Blaine again for continuing to ask Dad and include him up until he was no longer able to go. I always thought that was so kind and thoughtful.

Another source of gathering news for Dad was a visit to Pauls shop, just up the road from home. I know Dad enjoyed those, even though he likely kept Paul from doing his work sometimes. And as Paul would say, “when you saw Uncle Dalton coming with his coveralls and gloves on, you knew he had a job that needed to be done right now!” Thanks Paul for your patience with, and appreciation of the older folk.

On April 25, 1959, Dad married Laura Orser and a year later I was born. As everyone does, while Dad may have had faults, he was my father and I loved him. Dad was the first man to love me unconditionally, and he was always in my cheering section.

When Moms Alzheimers disease overtook her and she needed more professional care Dad was Moms tireless support and advocate. He visited her faithfully at least once a day, often more. Dad would give me a report every night on how Mom was, from the time she entered the care facility until she passed away, and was my link to Mom especially after it was not possible for her to carry on a telephone conversation.

One of both Dad and Moms favourite things in the last 25 years was their grandchildren, and for Dad, his great-granddaughter Lily. Dad always enjoyed visiting with Kathryn and Keith (even though some of his visits were short), and took an interest in what they were doing. Even in the last five years his opening phone conversation question would be “Hows Lily?”. Ive missed that these past two years.

Its hard to live away when you have aging parents. Its hard mentally and emotionally, and it is impossible to physically help out. And admittedly, it is a downside of being an only child.

I am truly grateful for the people who have assisted me in providing care for Dad while he was living at home and then at Carleton Manor. The staff at Carleton Manor have been wonderful to work with, and I appreciated so much their assistance and guidance over the last year and a half. I know they were fond of Dad and that he received exceptional care, but they were also very kind and helpful to me.

There are a number of folks I want to thank publicly, even though they will likely be embarrassed at being mentioned.

Thank you to Aunt Bud for looking out for Dad in the ways already mentioned and for always having her little brothers best interests at heart.

Thank you to Connie for all the ways she has helped our family over the years from Nanny Orser, to Mom, and Dad. I appreciate your kind and generous heart and your thoughtfulness.

Thank you to Blaine and Jean, again the ways I already mentioned, but also for checking in on Dad, and to Jean for the many trips she made driving him to appointments and treatments in Saint John and Fredericton over the years.

Thanks to Richard and Diana for being willing to be back-up support when needed.

Thanks to Pearl for all your wise suggestions, your compassion, concern, level-headedness, visiting Dad and praying with him, being a sounding board for me, and an extension of me when I couldnt be here.

And lastly, to Paul for being a huge help to me in so many ways. I literally could not have cleaned out Dads house without your and Elvas help. And you often provide a bit of much-needed comic relief in situations.

Thank you to all you folks who visited Dad, remembered him in your thoughts, or prayed for him. We appreciate what a kind and caring family you are.

This is Thanksgiving weekend, and although I feel a great loss in Dads passing, I am thankful for all he meant to me over the years and the many memories I have.

Dad we are going to miss you, each in our own way. You were our father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. We loved you and we will cherish our memories of you forever

Dalton was born on the homestead in Upper Brighton, the second youngest child of Scott & Lydia. He attended the country school in Upper Brighton, and Hartland Superior School. For the most part Dalton has always worked on the farm, occasionally working for Smith's loading lumber or in their potato house.

On February 15, 1946 Dalton and his brother Wendell bought the farm from their father. Dalton has always lived on the homestead and until 1979 worked the 165 acre farm, which stretches back from its railroad track boundary for about two miles. He usually had 90 to 100 acres planted in potatoes each year and recalls prices for a carload of potatoes ranging from a high of $17.50/barrel to as low as two cents a barrel, or dumping them.

In 1975 Dalton & Laura built a new house located at the bottom of the hill from the old one. The old house has remained vacant. During the fall of 1979 Dalton retired from farming. John Bubar purchased the land inside the Transs-Canada Highway strip (running through many farms) to the field bordering the old house and buildings which were retained by Dal. Don Hallett bought the land where the Trans-Canada runs through the farm. Dow Foster was the auctioneer for the majority of the equipment and machinery.

Dalton worked for Raymond Cook and the golf club in Woodstock for brief periods until he obtained employment as a distributor for Atlantic Lotto in August of 1980. He worked for them until 1991/92 when he retired. Dal enjoys reading, golfing and playing pool and cards.
